NY DMV Permit Exam at a Glance

You can expect to see 20 questions on your NY DMV written exam.  You must answer 14 questions correctly to pass your test.  This represents an accuracy score of 70%.  You must be a minimum of 16 years old to apply and take your DMV written test.  

How Much Does the New York Permit Test Cost?

The cost of the New York permit test varies by how old you are and where you live.  If you are 16-16.5 years old, your permit test costs $80.  If you are 16.5 to 17, your permit test costs 76.75.  If you are 17-17.5 years old, your permit test will cost $92.60.  If you are 17.5 to 18 years old, your permit test will cost $89.25. 

Residents of the Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester are required by the State of New York to pay a Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) fee.  The MCTD fee is $1.00 for every 6 months the permit will be valid.  There is an additional $30.00 fee for an Enhanced Driver Permit.
